Richard A. Shweder from the University of Chicago reviewed the new book "Who
Owns Native Culture?" by Michael F. Brown in the 14 September issue of the
New York Times Book Review. Brown, an anthropologist at Williams College and
a specialist in intellectual property law, has written what Shweder calls a
"brave, logical and even witty book about some of the hazards and challenges
of cultural heritage protection." Published by Harvard University Press, the
book raises many provocative questions about group legal rights to music,
art, and origin stories in relation, primarily, to issues arising in the
U.S. and Australia. The reviewer concludes that Brown's book proposes that
"informal social norms of decency and respect" responsive to indigenous
peoples are possible without creating "legally empowered...cultural
enclaves."
